Warehouse Management System and its Several Capabilities

[Untitled]Warehouse Management System also known as WMS is an active part of the supply chain management. In a warehouse, WMS aims at controlling the movement and storage of materials. This system also processes other associated transactions. These transactions may include shipping, receiving, picking etc.

WMS can be described as an advanced software solution. Its target users are manufacturing, distribution, and retail enterprises. Additionally, third-party logistics providers may also employ the use of WMS for gaining from the benefits of WMS.

There are still many small to medium size companies that do not utilize a WMS (Warehouse Management System). WMS software automates planning, production and fulfillment processes in a ‘captive’ warehouse (one that is part of a manufacturing operation) or a Distribution Center or 3PL (third party logistics). Examples of large scale WMS systems include offerings from Red Prairie, Oracle, SAP and Manhattan Associates. However, for smaller companies, offerings from companies such as Smartturn and ClearSpider are more affordable.

ADC specializes in adding bar code data collection to WMS systems thereby creating a completely automated warehouse operation. We utilize devices such as Access Points from Cisco and Motorola for wireless networking, hand held terminals such as the Motorola 9090 or the Intermec CN3 for scanning and data collection, and label printers such as Zebra’s ZM400 for labeling product.
